Question

I've noticed that since I've turned 40 I don't get lubricated like I used to. What is going on?

As women move toward peri-menopause and menopause the estrogen levels start to decline. This causes a thinning and drying in the vaginal wall. Of course, you need to check with your health care provider to rule out any other cause. Either way, vaginal dryness can make for painful intercourse. Where there's pain, there's avoidance. Top that off with a decreased libido due to the hormonal imbalance, and that makes for an unhappy situation.

There are a few things you can do:

  • Stay well hydrated by drinking all your water everyday. Everyone needs at least 64 oz. of water each day.
  • Avoid soaps, lotions, perfumes and douches as they can further irritate the vagina. Use a product recommended by your healthcare provider.
  • Since sexual arousal requires more time, take the time for lots of foreplay.
  • Use a lubricant every single time you have sex. I recommend the System Jo products for women over 40. Check out the toy guide for further information on lubricants. Click here Also check out the article in the article section on "Lube-Why Women Over 40 Absolutely Must Use It." Click here
